A buyer entering the compact crossover segment is spoiled by choice. Competitive brands have to stand out with attractive designs and a generous amount of standard equipment. INFINITI does this with their latest SUV offering, the newly reborn QX50, but goes one step further. The QX50 introduces an exclusive segment piece of revolutionary engine technology with the variable compression turbocharged 4 cylinder engine. The QX50 debuts this technology in the compact crossover segment to offer an interesting solution to achieving satisfactory fuel economy ratings and exciting engine characteristics. The variable compression technology does exactly as advertised: this 2.0L engine can alter the compression ratio of fuel and air within the cylinder to achieve the greatest fuel economy or deliver the most thrust when the driving situation demands it so. At one end of the spectrum, the compression ratio is 14:1 that will reduce fuel consumption. With the demand from the driver's throttle input, the engine will reach 8:1 compression for maximum power. The QX50 can produce 268 horsepower and 280lb/ft of torque and is mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with an AWD system. This configuration is the one and only powertrain setup for the new QX50.
Moving away from the engine, the QX50 has other aspects that will entice shoppers in this competitive segment. The entry-level QX50, known as the Luxe, comes standard with equipment such as the power tailgate, remote start, heated front seats, blind-spot warning, a panoramic glass roof and includes two touchscreens, the larger 8 inch (mostly responsible for the navigation) unit sits above the 7-inch display. This entry-level vehicle starts at $44,490CAD. Moving up in the range, more creature comforts like the AroundView 360 degree camera system, the active safety suite called ProPILOT Assist, tri-zone climate control, a heated steering wheel, adaptive front lights and so much more!
The Sensory trim level is the QX50's penultimate trim but offers all of the available technology that can be packed into the compact crossover. The Autograph trim retails for an additional $1500 as this trim offers an exclusive interior color combination of white leather and blue suede.
The interior of the INFINITI deserves attention with an interesting sculptural and flowing design. The two-tone colour setup with the brown and tan surfaces make it easy to stare. The execution of the stitching throughout the interior forces occupants to look closer and feel each divot into and under the quality material. The back seats will accommodate most body types without complaint, and the expansive trunk will offer more than enough space for anyone's day-to-day needs.
