Continue reading to learn about 5 summer adventures in Southern Alberta you probably haven’t experienced yet.

#1 Soak up the Sun at Lake Newell

No surprise here! Newell Paddle Boards got its name from (you guessed it) Lake Newell, located just a couple hours Southeast of YYC. Surrounding part of the lake is the family-focused campground of Kinbrook Provincial Park. Enjoy fishing, swimming, sailing, canoeing, and even motorized water sports in this 66 square kilometer reservoir! With an amazing beach and one of the warmest lake’s in Alberta, it’s a go-to spot for families looking for a fun and relaxing break away from the busy city.

#2 Get your adrenaline pumping at the Winsport Luge Track

(Downhill Karting Calgary. Winsport. Gravity Fuelled Fun.)

Calling all adrenaline junkies! This fast-paced summer activity is sure to get your heart racing and you don’t even have to leave the city. Experience Downhill Karting by Skyline Luge Calgary as a unique and exciting attraction, suitable for all ages and abilities. This 1800 meter track takes approximately 15 minutes to complete (including the chairlift), and provides the perfect amount of twists and turns.

#3 Retrace Dinosaur Footsteps Along Dinosaur Trail

(Gavin Hardcastle. 2016. Fototripper Photography. Drumheller Hoodoos. 2016.)

The road trip along Dinosaur Trail and Hoodoo Trail in Drumheller is a blast to the past! There is so much to do throughout the drive and the scenery out there is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The area is characterized by its array of dinosaur fossils, desolate valleys, and odd rock formations called ‘hoodoos’. The Bleriot Ferry is another fun part of the adventure. It’s a cable ferry that links two sections of Dinosaur Trail together and allows visitors to see the HooDoo’s from a different vantage point.

#4 Immerse Yourself in Nature at the Columbia Icefields Skywalk

(C. 2021. Is the Columbia Icefield Skywalk Worth It? (Jasper Skywalk). The Banff Blog.)

Explore the heart of Southern Alberta with a drive through the Icefield Parkways. Just roll down your windows and enjoy the mountain fresh air. This mesmerizing (and icy) road trip connects Banff and Jasper and goes past the Columbia Icefields Skywalk. The sky-high cliff walk ends up 918 ft above the Sunwapta Valley to a glass-bottomed observation platform. As long as you have plenty of snacks and drinks, the experience will be a once-in-a-lifetime.

#5 Set up Camp in Banff National Park

(Parks Canada. 2021.)

Camping is something that everyone should try as it really is an activity that can be enjoyed by all, regardless of age. There are so many ways to do it and a variety of activities to undertake while out, enjoying the beauty of nature. Most campgrounds will have a body of water nearby; the perfect opportunity to try a new water sport! Maybe even taking an inflatable stand-up paddleboard (iSUP) from Newell Paddle Boards for a spin. Especially in a place as beautiful as one of our Provincial Parks, the possibilities for fun with the family are ENDLESS while camping!
